Those alone I may have dealt with, but the screen also had an absolutely awful interlacing effect, where you could see each opposite frame drawn back and forth. The backlight I have no complaints about, as it seemed on par with the DS Lite at least, but using it here seemed to create some new ghosting artifacts as well. While GBA games do display slightly larger on the GBA SP than on the DS Lite, the difference is quite minimal, and the system still feels positively tiny. The headphone jack adapter, which is not my preferred solution to begin with, also seems to be of shockingly low quality for such a simple device, and resulted in awful quality through the headphones compared to a DS Lite or presumably a standard GBA. Quality aside, it's also a single mono speaker, which feels a bit absurd when the system is outputting stereo audio. I get the sense that this doesn't matter much to people, especially with the GBA's lackluster soundchip, but well-constructed soundtracks on the system absolutely suffer more than they need to on the poor quality GBA SP speaker (which, from what I can tell, is quite similar to the one in the DS lite). What was supposed to be the pinnacle of GBA experiences, so lauded by people on the internet, was really a rather sad device by modern standards. It was time to upgrade, so I sold my DS Lite and purchased two systems, an AGS-101 GBA SP and a DSi XL, one to play each generation in their best form, or so I assumed. The DS lite's 3 inchers felt puny by comparison, not to mention the speakers were quite poor quality in comparison to later DS and 3DS models. Phone screens increased in size, every mobile screen was getting bigger. I have never had the best eyesight, and having a nice 4.88-inch screen was a fantastic improvement for me. However, the 3DS XL changed my standards. I had a EZ Flash 3-in-1 with a nifty border feature, and had no complaints, playing GBA to my heart's content. I used a DS Lite for GB/C/A games, as well as DS games. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter, be it deep insight or just how you like to play the games.Ī number of years ago everything was right in the world. TL DR: It seems to me that there is no accurate way to play GBA games on a handheld that is up to modern standards. I'm not sure if anyone can save me from this rabbit hole, but it's worth a try.
